Bay Haven Charter Academy promotes a technique that yields improved academic results, self -development and character education. Teaching techniques go well beyond Florida Sunshine State Standards' focus into broad levels of skill-building. These methods, when combined with traditional instructional strategies, give our students a strong information foundation and skills repertoire upon which to build their future.
Core Curriculum - A framework that incorporates the formal performance based Florida Sunshine State Standards.
Emphasis on reading, writing, science and mathematics as well as foreign language, physical education, the arts, and technology.
Our overall goal is to establish a flexible "open framework" that supports creativity, high standards and a solid academic foundation.
The Curriculum encourages steady academic progress as students build their knowledge and skills from one year to the next.
We offer Art, Music, Spanish, and Physical Education. Reading, writing, and spelling are taught by our fine faculty utilizing Open Court curriculum resources, learning centers and innovative instruction. Our main resources for mathematics instruction are Sadlier-Oxford at the K-5 level, and both Glencoe and Holt McDougall at the middle school level. These series "raise the bar" and allow direct instruction methods to be employed to facilitate your child's individual needs.
Harcourt science is the core curriculum at the K-5 level and Prentice-Hall is the curriculum for the middle school. Middle school teaches each area of science independently at individual grade levels. Sixth grade teaches life sciences, seventh teaches earth science and eighth grade handles the physical sciences. Our faculty differentiates instruction for the needs of the learner and employs instructional strategies that reach beyond the standards.
More information about textbooks and other materials can be found on our Textbooks page.
Personal Learning Plan (P.L.P.) for each student that assesses his/her skill level when he/she enrolls in the school.
A path for growth is designed for each student who is periodically reassessed to determine skill development.
The P.L.P. will ensure that the individual needs of each student are met and will provide parents the opportunity to participate in educational goal setting and monitoring of their child's academic progress.
Bay Haven staff has been engaged in developing curriculum guides. The curriculum guide is a grade level specific document which outlines the curriculum for the core academic areas of language arts, math, science, and social studies. These guides give an overview of the units in each content area and the corresponding activities/skills/concepts included in each unit. Additionally, resources, assessments and Sunshine State Standards alignment are included with each unit description. These are broad documents which communicate the major components of Bay Haven Charter Academy's curriculum. The curriculum guides are not intended to reflect specific lesson plans for a course/subject. That level of information can be obtained on individual teacher websites.
Reading Mastery Plus
Reading Mastery, with its synthetic phonics approach, helps students develop strategies for reading and understanding. It is proven to reduce the prevalence of reading problems and elevate reading skills of at-risk children well into the average range. Everything is taught through demonstration and action and practiced until it is fully understood and each child can apply it. Finally, every concept is reviewed thoroughly to ensure mastery. Explicit phonics, fluency, and comprehension are key building blocks in the Reading Mastery Program.
Corrective Reading
Corrective Reading is a comprehensive intervention program designed for students in grades 4-12. The program is tightly sequenced, offering 2 distinct Intervention Strands: Decoding and Comprehension. There are 4 levels at each of these two strands that address varied reading skills and ability levels. The Decoding strand lesson format incorporates word-attack skills practice, group reading, individual reading checkouts, and workbook exercises. The Comprehension strand lesson format synthesizes thinking operations, workbook exercises, information, and oral group work.
Great Leaps
Great Leaps Reading is designed as a supplementary reading program to be used in conjunction with the curriculum currently being implemented. Students are provided intervention on a one-on-one basis. Primary emphasis is on fluency, with the assumption that comprehension will improve if the child becomes a more fluent reader. Great Leaps is designed to be a fluency-building program, not a complete reading program. Phonics are practiced within a fluency context, but are not taught explicitly. Phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension are not addressed. Student progress is monitored, charted, and rewarded, thus increasing student motivation.
